History
Since 1922 – Cycle shop opened by Arch McBain a prominent cyclist holding various state titles and having previously worked for a large cycle manufacturer. It was a highly competitive business with in excess of 30 cycle shops in the immediate area.
1947 – Archie’s son Kevin, also a prominent cyclist joined the family business and with great foresight as to changes in the cycling industry and products, he built an icon amongst the cycling fraternity and Tasmanian families. He maintained and built on the high quality local cycle manufacture with employment of Frank MCallum a legendary chrome moly frame builder and oversaw the ride through dragsters, BMX and 10 speeds. His cycling spirit and competitiveness saw the continued success and growth of the business.
1981 – McBain cycles became the first supplier of Giant bikes in Australia.
1990 – Kate McBain joined the business and continued the passion and great insight into leading brands and new technology, including the journey into mountain bikes, the e bike and the joining with Giant, the world’s biggest bike brand, to become a Giant branded store.
2017 – McBain Cycles having been the first shop in Australia to supply Giant bikes, becomes a Giant Branded store.
Present – GIANT HOBART remains a third generation family owned business under the ownership of Kate the CEO (and definite family chief) and her brother Roger McBain who despite claiming to be on a gap year still plays around in the background support between mountain bike rides.
